The Central Plains Cancer Care Services
is a non-profit organization that is
dedicated to improving the quality of life
for cancer patients, survivors, and their
family members. Educational programs
are also provided for the early detection
and prevention of cancer.
Dollars raised will serve all
communities within the boundaries
of Central Plains Cancer Care Services.
Dollars will also be forwarded
to CancerCare Manitoba for research.
Central Plains Cancer Care
is a grassroots organization.
All funds are derived through donations,
memorials, and fundraising initiatives.

SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMS
Respect the Sun
(Grades K-12) This program provides the best stratgies for protecting your
skin and enjoying sun safety. An educator explains how to perform regular
self-examination, the importance of regular doctor visits, and the importance
of implementing simple sun precautions to aid in the prevention of skin cancer.
Living Drug Free
(Grades K-12) This program focuses on the harmful effects of tobaccos. Students
are given the refusal skills and knowledge that will assist them in making
healthy decisions.
Nutrition
(Grades K-12) This program uses strategies that are effective in helping students
develop the basic skills of good nutrition providing positive health promotion. An
educator provides essential information required to make supportive nutritional choices.
Breast Self-Examination Awareness
(Grade 9-12) An educator uses a breast model to provide students with the educational
knowledge and skill to perform a proper breast self-examination. The educator also
provides general health information, addressing the growth and development process,
importance of examination, and health testing procedure information.
The Importance of the Pelvic Exam
(Grade 9-12) An educator helps students learn the facts about pelvic anatomy, bi-manual
examination, and Pap smears. This program will help to overcome apprehension and
encourage everyone to adopt the discussed practices as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Testicular Self-Examination Awareness
(Grades 9-12) A video explains the proper technique to perform a monthly self-examination.
An educator provides general health information addressing the growth and development
process, importance of examinations, and health testing procedure information.
OTHER PROGRAMS/SERVICES
Psychosocial Oncology Services
Professional counsellors are available at no charge to help patients cope with cancer, confront
practical issues, address family issues, explore personal issues and access group support
programs. Individuals may contact us directly or may be referred by local physicians,
regional Community Cancer program staff and personnel from CancerCare Manitoba.
Equine-Assisted Programs
Professional counsellors are involved with the the Equine-Assisted Instructor to create a workshop
where you learn to connect not only with the horses but enjoy spending time with other Cancer Patients.
This is a very relaxing and enjoyable 4 hours. No horse experience necessary (no riding!) just hands on with the horse.
A great meal is served at the workshop. This program is run in conjuction with Roycan's Country Haven
in Portage la Prairie, MB (Private and Group sessions are available)

SUPPORT GROUPS FOR CHILDREN
Kids Can Cope Retreat
Spring and fall retreats are offered to help youth (9-17 years of age) learn about cancer and
enhance their resiliency in the face of the many new stresses they face following a diagnosis
of cancer in a parent, sibling, grandparent or other close family member. Retreats will take place
at a facility located on the shores of Lake Manitoba or at an equestrian centre (Roycan's Country Haven)
where involvement with horses can be incorporated into the program.

Kids Grief Groups
Spring and fall retreats are offered to assist youth (9-17 years of age) with the grief process following
the death of a loved one. The retreats will focus on memories, feelings and healthy coping following
the death of a loved one. Retreats will take place at a facility located on the shores of Lake Manitoba
or at an equestrian centre (Roycan's Country Haven) where involvement with horses can be
incorporated into the program.

The Community Driver Program
For individuals having an appointment at a treatment facility/hospital/clinic. Cancer patients who require
this service will be picked up at their residence and returned following their appointment. A family
member/friend is welcome to travel with the patient. Cost to the patient is $15.00 round trip.
The transportation program is for in-province travel.
TAI CHI for Cancer
Tai Chi is practised throughout the world as an effective exercise for health. It consists of fluid, gentle
movements that are relaxed and slow in tempo. This exercise program improves concentration, balance,
posture and heart and lung function: it also helps relieve stress, pain, and stiffness.
Manitoba Makes Waves
As part of their cancer treatment, a water exercise and support program is offered spring and fall for
women who have had surgery. Although this program is designed for women who have had breast
surgery, all women who have had cancer surgery will benefit. Ths ability to swim is not a pre-requisite.
The Make Waves Program has a dual focus---the tremendous healing properties of water provide an
excellent medium for effective, well-balanced exercise as well as a healthy environment for enjoyable
sharing and socializing.
Kickin' Butts
Educators will facilitate an 8-week stop smoking program designed to give a positive feeling and
address the biggest needs, problems, or fears when it comes to quitting smoking.
Adult Community Presentations
Educators will provide fact-based information on:
-Such cancers as prostate, breast, ovarian, colorectal and lung.
-How to maintain the best dietary choices for overall health and well-being
-Destructive ramifications of smoking, addiction, self-worth, health effects and secondhand smoke.
Support Groups
A forum in which cancer patients can discuss their anxieties and problems concerning their disease.
Support groups demonstrate that you are not alone, that others share similar experiences and concerns.
Lending Library
Consisting of videos and books, plus internet resources
Breast Self-Examination
Clinics and assistance provided with the mobile mammography
breast screening program.
Reach to Recovery
Trained visitors to assist those having breast surgery.
Public Informational Sessions
Representatives of the "Look Good, Feel Better Program"
Wigs, Prostheses, Turbans at no charge when available.
On-Going two-way communication is maintained with the "Palliative Care Association"
