KIDS CAN COPE

THIS PROGRAM IS SPONSORED BY “CENTRAL PLAINS CANCER CARE SERVICE”

CHILDREN WHO HAVE FAMILY MEMBERS WITH CANCER (PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS, SIBLINGS, AUNTS, UNCLES, COUSINS…)

CAN REGISTERED THROUGH CPCCS to be involved with “Kids Can Cope Program”.

All expenses for this program is funded by DONATIONS to CPCCS.

8 Youth attend a 24 hr retreat which is held at Roycan’s Country Haven in Portage la Prairie, MB and owned by Roy & Candice Kontzie.

Don Middleton and Candice Kontzie co-ordinate the program.

Each meal the young people help prepare the food and an old fashion cookstove is what the food is cooked on.

If the weather is nice we have the outside grills and bonfire which can be used.

The program involves working with horses but also learning how to take care of them and feed them.

Cleaning out their stalls is just part of it!

Various exercises with the horses are preformed in the arena or outside if the sun is shining.

Theirs is no riding during these sessions, just connecting and learning about the horses.

Even seasoned horse people would come away learning things.

The horse events are based on Equine-Assisted Programs which are given at Roycan’s Country Haven.

During the retreat, sleeping accommodations are in trailers which individuals have donated for the weekend.

One of the fun exercises is mud painting the horse. Then the youth get to bath the horse.

Lots of fun and laughter.

The program is for youth 9-18 yrs of age. The retreats are split into the various age groups.

Once the parents arrive for supper on the last night the youth  get to put one of their parents through a horse exercise.

The exercise below is our TRUST exercise.

The parents have to listen to their child give them instructions while they are blindfolded and leading the horse.
